What is Habitat for Humanity?
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical based Christian housing ministry that works in partnership with people everywhere. Our mission is to work in partnership with God and the people of our community to build houses with and for people in need, so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God’s love and can live and grow into all that God intends. Habitat builds new relationships and a sense of community, as well as new housing by gathering people from all walks of life to join in together using their heads, hearts, and hands. Buzzards Bay Area Habitat for Humanity became an affiliate of HFHI in December 1996, encompassing the towns of Acushnet, Fairhaven, Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester, Wareham, New Bedford and Dartmouth.
Buzzards Bay Area Habitat for Humanity, whenever possible, uses donated monies, building sites, services, and materials for each building project. Volunteer labor assures that construction costs are minimized. Habitat is not a give away program, but a joint venture in which those who benefit are involved in the work at every level. Families pay for their homes through a low cost, no interest mortgage and that money is then reinvested in future Habitat homes for more families in need. Each homeowner family is required to invest a minimum of 300 hours of "SWEAT EQUITY" into the construction of their home and / or homes for others increasing the dignity and pride of ownership among family members and fosters the development of positive relationships in the community while reducing the cost of the house. Every home is completed at no profit to Habitat, whose sole purpose is to make decent shelter available to as many families as possible without regard to race or religion. (Habitat adheres to all nondiscriminatory selection policies).
Based on 2008 figures (subject to adjustments each year) an applicant should be able to cover payments of approximately $600 a month for mortgage, taxes and insurance. Applicants need to have a steady income of about $37,500 a year.
